Budapest? You mean budaBEST

Studying abroad in Europe has some major advantages- namely that every country is teeny tiny so once your'e actually on the continent getting around is a (semi)breeze. Since I've been fortunate to spend months living in Europe, I've hopped around quite a bit, but this past weekend may well have been one of my favorite traveling experiences to date.

After already acquiring a fondness for eastern european countries after a weekend trip to Prague 2 years ago, I've been wanting to go to Budapest as I had never heard anything but positive feedback from fellow student travelers. I mean, there's warm baths, some of the worlds best Christmas markets, and very cheap alcohol. Whats not to like?!

And lemme tell you friends, it did NOT DISAPPOINT. Beautiful to the point of looking like a storybook, there was nothing that I disliked about the city during my short time there. The perfect mixture of quaint old eastern european and new modernized hipness, there was absolutely something to do every minute that I was there. I really wish I was better at pulling the all nighter thing but I didn't want to torture my travel companions with an angsty little hothead (me.)

Me, not torturing Claire.

Even with no all nighters pulled, we managed to explore the ruin bars, spend a day in the baths, dance to baltic DJs, and I managed to eat all the vegan food I could get my hands on. Overall a successful trip, and one I would totally repeat.

Arriving Friday evening, we had a quick dinner and then headed straight out to the Christmas market to partake in some hot mulled wine (my favorite) and grab a few snacks. The best part about traveling in countries like Hungary is the currency. If your'e a poor college student but want to feel like a baller for once, try to avoid high exchange rates and opt for exploring countries that art as stereotypically glam. (Obvious maybe, but a good idea to keep in your back pocket.) The christmas market was full of yummy treats (I even found a vegan fried potato stick thing!) and walking around in the cold air with the lights and smells was Mariah Carey Christmas album magical. Not to mention- the cutest crafts which make great gift ideas!

Little porcelain flowers! They'll never die :)
Later that night we went out for a few drinks at the ruin bar Szimpla which was RAD. I'm really into the whole found decor thing, and I love bars that have lots of nooks and crannies to explore and get lost in. Two stories, Szimpla had a multitude of rooms ranging from a wine bar, a dance floor, and an outdoor patio with a bratwurst bar. Something to keep everyone happy if you ask me! (also- $1 beers!!!)

We stayed at The Hive party hostel which proved itself to be clean and organized with a nice bar providing more cheap drinks- although I'm pretty sure most people were up there for the mega babe bartenders. Your room key even locks your locker so you don't have to bring a lock!

My favorite part of the experience by far was the baths. Debating between the two top choices of the Széchenyi and the Gellért we decided to check out Gellért as it's known for having more indoor thermal baths, suitable for our whiny-too cold-california bods.

I felt very covered and modest in my high-waisted bottoms, as the general population of elderly Hungarian men opted for speedos. (The experience was most definitely a confidence booster) Coming out to be about $17, the experience is quite a steal as you get an all day pass, a changing room with showers and blow driers, saunas and steam rooms, and the ability to float around in a plethora of mosaic thermal baths until you're too wrinkly to function. If you're brave (or the devil) there's even a sauna that rings in at 195 degrees fahrenheit that I promptly exited after 2 minutes. My friends even got 30 minute massages for $15 extra! (I was to much of a cheap asshole to partake and spent my time getting stared at by strange men, lovely.)

The rest of the time was spent strolling, eating, and drinking a little more. (What else do you expect from college students?) Budapest has great options of quick cheap restaurants with a variety of styles if you're not into traditional Hungarian fare. The bridges are beautiful, and its really interesting to take a look at the differences between the old and new side of the river. The public transportation is super easy ~metros and trams~ so theres no obstacles in getting around!

My finial advice? GO to frikin Budapest  it'll be awesome, get a bath pass n soak with some old men, stop and have coffee at cute cafes and listen to British tourists accents, meander through the Christmas markets drinking delicious hot wine (and if you're feeling crazy some hot prune vodka), and definitely check out the ruin bars- a great place to meet fellow travelers and dance off some of that aforementioned prune vodka.

I still feel like theres so much more to see, so for now its not a goodbye, its a see you later to Budapest.

Búscú!

Options for vegan dining in Budapest:
Hummus Bar for awesome falafel with all the fixings
Pad Thai Wok bar for a box of customized noodles for about $6
Funky Pho - Super cute with veggie options
Pasta Bar - Exactly what the name says, lots of options and cheap!

This, madame, is Versailles

Let's get one thing out in the open right here right now. I love Marie Antoinette. It's a love bordering on obsession, slightly unhealthy, and honestly, it's a little weird.

I'm not sure what it is. Maybe it's the outfits, maybe its because I'm a history nerd. Maybe its because I have a deep rooted love for Rococo and pastel pastries and want to be Kirsten Dunst surrounded by pugs and having rendezvous with that hot dude who plays the Swedish Count. I really have no clue, but to me, she's the 18th century Beyonce. (The french citizens of that time seemed to have differing opinions... cue guillotine)

So it's a little strange that after spending 6 months of my life year I had waited until yesterday to finally make the trek out to Versailles, but after only hearing negative things (lines too long, too many people, never going again if my life and first born child depended on it... etc) I didn't want to ruin my love with a less than substantial visit, especially knowing the fact that I hate unwarranted human contact.

But as I'm only a resident of Paris for a few more weeks my friend Claire and I decided to make the journey and we were not dissapointed.

Pro tip? GO TO VERSAILLES IN WINTER PEOPLE.

Versailles in winter = no crowds, no lines, exponentially less loud americans (sorry friends) and more room to frolic around and pretend you're part of the royal court, if you're into that kind of thing. Sure, there may be less flowers, but I assure you everything else is way up to snuff.

The most beautiful sprawling garden I have ever been in, the grounds of Versailles are what all my francophile dreams are made of. Abandoning our recently acquired Parisian aloofness, Claire and I frolicked across the fields, taking little notice of the possibility that the french people around us were not used to hyperactive American girls.

Claire and I spent a total of 4+ hours exploring the grounds, with our adventures consisting of

making it all the way down the Grand Canal

Say hi to Claire!

up to the Grand Trianon, back down across the field of sheep,

So. Many. Pastels.
through the woods and the Sun King's english garden,

explored Marie's petite Trianon, and still had so much left to see. We didn't even make it inside the palace! (not that I'm disappointed as this just means a return visit :-) )

Ending with a pizza (for all my vegans out there- you can get it w/o cheese) and a glass of wine, it was all in all a wonderful day and a highly recommendable experience. If you love nature, history, or pretty much beautiful shit in general (but hate crowds), do this bad boy on a sunny winter day. It might be a little chilly, but bringing a scarf is so worth the avoidance of a bunch of af pushy tourists.

Becoming my own kind of Parisian...

For the past 4 months I have been living in Paris. Learning more about this beautiful country, city, and myself every day, there is nothing that could make me more thankful in this moment than the fact that I have had the opportunity to do this. Although now is a tumultuous time to be in Europe (or anywhere in the world, honestly...) there is nowhere else I'd rather be, and I wanted to share my experience with the most recent tragedies and my own journey that gave me such a huge tie to Paris and everything that it is, starting from the beginning.

After the attacks on Paris on November 13 this year I was hit with a stream of worried questions and opinions from those who knew me back home. Through news and other media outlets, people had both true and false information about what was happening in Paris, and though I thoroughly appreciated the love and concern, I had a hard time explaining my own feelings on the subject. Difficulty in forming responses to these people- thousands of miles away- stemmed from my inability to figure out any justification for the tragedies worldwide that were coming to life after that night.

I had a difficult relationship with Paris from the beginning. Beautiful, but difficult. But she had become my home, and something I feel immense love for. And that night, she was attacked. I don't know how you can justify that- ever.

What it did make me think about was my journey with Paris itself- and the personal ties it held for me, and what the city came to mean to me.

So I start from the beginning, more to get this all out of my own head than out of expectation that anyone will actually take the time to read it (I can get a bit wordy)

Here goes nothing.

I came to Paris 4 months ago with nothing but adventure on my mind and excitement bursting from my seams. Coming back to the city I had fallen in love with the summer prior was almost all that had kept me going during the tumultuous 3rd year of university. "Next year I'll be in Paris, and none of this will matter" became my mantra of the 2014-2015 school year. (Seriously, If I could have made it into a bumper sticker, I would have)

But as the world is not perfect and does not go according do my precise plans (still reeling from this semi recent discovery tbh, is that what adulthood is?!) my first 2 weeks were not the Parisian dream I had been replaying on repeat in my head for the past 9 months. In fact, my plans took quite the beating.

First 20 minutes on French soil and my ideal scenario took a hit. After waiting at the baggage claim, the crowds cleared and there was still no sign of my two, meticulously packed suitcases. In a thick French accent, I was informed that my bags were in Washington DC, but I had no reason to worry (HAHA) because they would arrive in 2 days.

Now I did have a premonition that this might happen, as I had been rerouted from LA to SF. But I had also prayed extremely hard to the parisienne style goddesses and I was hoping for a miracle. (I felt jipped)

So instead of spending my first parisian days in the carefully concocted oh-so-chic all black ensembles I had planned on impressing the masses of Paris with, I had 1 pair of extremely ripped boyfriend jeans, beat up converse, and no access to a blow dryer. With newly snipped bangs, this was quite the stylistic tragedy.

Great start, right?

Still I pushed on, hoping my new peers would look past the sloppy ensemble and see me for who I was, an at heart parisian. Arriving alone, I had thought I would immediately be able to conjure up a supreme squad of people with the same interests, sense of humor, likes/dislikes as me(baguette with avocado, anyone?) and that by day 2 we would have taken over the city and be spending the remainder of our time frolicking through the chicest arrondissements sipping espressos, soaking up each others awesomeness.

Again, actual events did not go according to plan, as I arrived to the first orientation jet lagged, make-up-less and groggy in my flannel and high-tops, looking kind of like the greasy kids "selling advice" on the sidewalks of Venice beach. (Not exactly the modern day Coco Chanel vibe I was trying to convey.)

So tear tear, my minor struggles in the most beautiful city continued for two weeks, making me feel an equal mix of outcast and spoiled brat.

Not making friends right away, I spent a lot of time sitting in my room alone. My dreams of sitting at cafes and making conversation with waiters was seriously hindered by the fact that the small amount of french I knew seemed to fall out of my ears whenever a measly "bonjour" was thrown in my direction, replaced with a sort of deer in the headlights look and a lot of uhh and errm coming out of the hole I formally had appreciated as my mouth. Immediately giving myself away as American scum, most encounters made me want to melt into the floor. (Maybe not actually what they thought, but definitely how I felt.)

I thought learning french in France would be extremely easy, a sort of osmosis like process. What did I care about the fact that I took 3 years of Spanish in southern California and could barely order a burrito, let alone form any coherent sentences. I would be IN France so obviously it would all work out. Wrong. Oh so wrong Mandee, oh so naive.

The language that sounded so beautiful when it was being spoken around me sounded like I was speaking with a mouth full of mashed potatoes. (Cute, I know)

And so the struggles continued and accumulated, until I felt so much "the other" that I wondered if I had made the right choice in coming at all. As much as I wanted to be Parisian, my image of what that was and what I was actually working with were just not matching up.

Not one to usually give up, (usually... I mean does anyone ACTUALLY finish those 30 day workout challenges???) I tottered along. And gradually, it happened. I made friends. And not just the "you're my friend because I'm absolutely alone and desperate" kind, but real ones, ones who I could explore the city with, have serious conversations with, and bond over our shared incompetence at conforming to the stereotypical parisian style and social norms. (I'm just going to say it, the thought of wearing a navy/black blazer and Stan Smith Adidas every day for the rest of my youth bores me to tears.)

With these new relationships and a newfound courage to explore the city, both with myself and with others, I was able to somewhat find my niche. I struggled with the "Cool American" vs "not cool American" dichotomy, the pestering question of how much of your self you were actually willing to give up in order to conform to expectations, where you fit in and the pressing question of even wanting to fit in. At home I was happy being different, but being so obviously unique in a completely unfamiliar place with new people and a new language can be really overwhelming.

And yet I figured it out. Slowly but surely, I figured the damn thing out. With the help of my new friends, we found thrift stores that reminded of us of home, reminded us of what we wanted to express ourselves as- our real selves. Each day passed with a little more comprehension of what was going on around us, gradually storing more and more cultural capital and feeling more at ease. We found bars we felt comfortable in, streets we loved strolling, areas that reminded of us of our scenes at home, just with a little french twist. We found people we could see our selves connecting with, and after a couple of glasses of vin rouge we actually had the courage to do so.

Day by day, my happiness in Paris, and with my Parisian self, grew. I could appreciate everything so quintessentially Parisian going on around me- the people rushing through the streets with a baguette in their arm, the Haussmann style architecture that gave everything a white-cake like look, the women walking little dogs next to giant ones through the busy boulevards, little old ladies rolling their shopping bags behind them full of produce from the marché, the daily characters on the metro, the children in the city parks giggling and screeching in french, and the fact that I was at the center of it all.

A month into my trip I travelled to Germany. I'm not sure what it was, maybe the fact that I was camping, (for those of you that don't know, the outdoors is NOT my thing) or possibly the fact that I almost got arrested by a duo of overzealous metro police, but I began to ache for Paris. Upon my return to the city I felt an overwhelming sense of relief, turned to my friend, and said the words "I am so fu*king glad to be home." Parson my french (ha ha...) but that's when I knew. I knew that in my own 21 year old expat way, I had become Parisian, and that Paris was my home. Paris held my heart.

Back at it

So I know its been a good while, and that nobody may be interested at this point (I'm sure there are plenty of other 21 year olds whose musings you could be reading) but living abroad for the past 5 months has given me a new outlook, and one that I wish to share with anyone who cares to listen.
Whereas before I was mostly focused on the evolution of my style, I've decided to add my travels, personal growth, adventures, and life-changers into the mix. Still to be an outlet for myself and my journeys, I hope anyone who passes by here can read and enjoy :-)

Been a minute...

I'm baaaack! It's really been a while since I've posted (while being a generous word) and I've decided to get back into it. With the overwhelming transition of finishing my third year of college, quitting my job, studying in the UK for the summer, and now living in Paris, there wasn't much time for writing. But since my life is so amazingly wonderful right now I knew I had to get back into the swing of documenting my exploits- prompting me to start blogging again.

For the few of you that read this that aren't my close friends(bless you), let me fill you in. I am currently in Paris studying abroad. I hope that many adventures are about to come my way and I will be able to document them to my massive fan base (ha ha ha...)

But until then I say Au revoir and I wish you all a beautiful end of the summer!

Oh, and I got bangs! Thought I'd change it up a bit ya feel

Sunshine and Sunflowers

If you haven't caught on yet, my absolute favorite flowers are sunflowers. Bright, big, and happy, they are my favorite gift to receive, my favorite plant to fill my apartment with, and my absolute favorite print for anything I buy. One of my favorite items in my entire wardrobe is my American Apparel sunflower print high waisted shorts. I've had them for about 3 years, and though I wear them frequently they have stayed in great shape and never fail to give me a sunny outlook on the day.
While these shorts can be styled in many ways, I find myself gravitating towards them when I want to be comfy but still make a statement. I think that American Apparel has a great selection of printed shorts that let you do just that, ranging from sunflowers to watermelons to daises, perfect for the coming summer season.
On this particularly warm and sunny day, I styled the sunflower shorts with a plain cropped tank in a pretty cornflower blue and my trusty converse. Wanting to keep the effort to a minimum, I put my hair up in two baby buns at the base of my neck, keeping my hair out of my face and out of my way. I often wear outfits like these on lazy school and work days, or on the weekend before I prepare a more extravagant outfit for that night.

My friend Desiree took these cutie photos, and spotted the perfect classic car to take them by! As always, thank you for reading and I hope the rest of your week is just as sunny as my shorts :) XOXO - Mandee

Sunday Funday

I think I know I'm getting old because Sunday's are starting to become one of my favorite days of the week. Even if I have work or homework, I always manage to fit one relaxing thing in even if its just an hour and a half yoga class or a trip to the beach.
This Sunday was spent at my parents house in Southern California eating all the yummy food I could stuff in my mouth, playing with my pups, and floating around in on my new toy.
My sister took this quick picture (ignore the bruise) wearing my favorite bikini bottoms and my new top that I got a few days ago.
Outfit Details:
Underwire bikini top - Urban Outfitters
High waisted bikini bottoms - American Apparel
Pizza Floatie - Urban Outfitters

All black and simple, this suit is a good pick for days where I'm not feeling 100%. Plus, black looks good on everybody! I hope you all had a great weekend and I'm planning on being back soon with another post, so stay tuned! :)

Pretty in Pink

Hey guys!!! Long time no… see? Life has gotten pretty crazy lately, and I've really let this project fall by the wayside. But don't get too sad, I'm baaaaaaack with more idea's than ever!
Thanks to some amazing creative collaboration with my close friend Des, I was able to get some long overdue outfit pictures that I think capture the essence of spring pretty well, if I do say so myself. If you have a spare second you should definitely check out her work at http://deadstxle.com :)

For me, spring and warm weather screams for one thing: COLOR. Any excuse to wear my favorite pink pieces is a beautiful thing indeed, and I rushed at the chance to put these together in a bright blushy ensemble. Pink just makes me feel so… pretty! Like I can feel the essence of Molly Ringwald pulsing through my veins, encouraging me to continue the day with as much 80's attitude as possible. While this outfit is loud to say the least, I do think it would be fun to wear for a girls day out or any day that required a little visible pick me up.

To break up the outfit and give it definition I decided to mix prints. Because both the stripes and the lip prints are small, I think they compliment each other nicely and correspond while still sending out a fun and funky vibe.

Since I was already going all out girly-girl with the rosy hue, I completed the outfit with some sparkly heeled jellies and heart shaped sunglasses a-la-Lana Del Rey.

Outfit Details:
Crop Top: American Apparel
Skirt: Goodwill
Shoes: Juju Jellies
Sunglasses: Wildfox

I hope you are all enjoying the warm spring weather as much as I am and your outfits are reflecting it! Thank you so much for reading and taking the time out of your busy day to support me! It means the world :)

Mom butt on point

Hey friends! So lately I've been really busy and I have found myself going for quick and easy outfits. As the school quarter comes to an end, sometimes it's hard to look cute while balancing school, work, and anything else that may come up. My solution? The mom jean. Some of you may be thinking that I'm crazy, and under the impression that the mom jean is the least attractive thing you could grab in your closet. And while you're entitled to your opinion, I'm here to tell you how different types of mom jeans can be versatile, ranging from comfy to cute to sexy. Yes, sexy.
Over the past few years I have collected an array of mom jeans. Whenever I find a solid pair in a thrift store I just can't seem to help myself. Not someone to really wear normal jeans most of the time, my mom jeans are like my substitute for sweatpants. Comfy, yet trendy. What's not to love?

the collection!

Since some of you might be doubting my claim that mom jeans could indeed be sexy, I thought I'd start out with these bad boys. Fitting tight in all the right places, this pair definitely put a spring in my step. My go-to look when traveling, I always find myself putting these in my suitcase first. They can be casual or a little more daring, and I cannot contain my love. Want to feel like Rachel from Friends? Pick up a pair for yourself. You won't be disappointed.

What says mom more than pleats? These guys always make me feel like Aunt Becky from Full House, something I have no qualms about. Saggy in the backside and tapered at the ankle, this might not be my most generically "sexy" pair, but boy do I love them. By adding a cropped sweater tank, jellies, and a big scrunchie I can take it straight back to the 90s. (Still looking for my Uncle Jesse though…)

The best thing about thrifting is the ability to do DIY without worrying about a piece of expensive clothing. Buying these high waisted beauties for just $3, I was free to take the tweezers to them and do as I wished. Adding a destructed effect to these light wash jeans adds a little definition perfectly fitting for warmer days.

Mom or Dad? This pair could arguably be way to big for me. Do I care? Not really. When I'm feeling REALLY lazy and just want to snuggle up in my bed, these are the pair I reach for. Large and in charge, my younger sister did indeed ask if I was wearing my dad's pants. Even with her sassy commentary, I love these pants, and I think they look very cute with a graphic tee and a simple pair of converse high tops!

I picked up this last pair while thrifting with my aunt. I love the grungy acid wash, and I think this pair is a really nice addition to my wardrobe. While most acid wash jeans I find are skinny, this pair is super loose and baggy. To add some shape to these, I usually wear a fitted crop top and tie a flannel around my waist. Viola! A comfy yet edgy look.

As always, thanks for reading!

Hey guys! Just wanted to make a short post about what I've been up to at work this week! With summer and spring coming we are getting more and more new pieces at the store every day. From floral to festival wear, each box that comes in just holds more and more goodies. This week I merchandised a table for the more boho section of the store and I'm pretty happy with how it turned out! This "shop" is all about the summer boho vibe, focusing on neutrals with pops of richer colors like rust. To add depth to the table placed a few house wear items to break up the clothing! As always, you're the best for looking! -xoxo Mandee

Last Friday Night

Hi friends! I know I said I was going to be better about posting more, and I really haven't. Life just gets so crazy sometimes ya know? But I really do want to get into the swing of blogging frequently, more for myself than for any other reason. I did get my camera though, so hopefully its arrival with spark some new creativity in me and light the fire that I need!
Last Friday I went to my friends birthday party in downtown Ventura. It's been really warm where I live, so even though it's mid-February I'm able to sport mini dresses sans cardigan and be completely fine! I'm more a fan of cold weather, but I do love myself a good sundress.

Outfit Details:
Dress - Urban Outfitters
Hat - Urban Outfitters
Shoes - Vagabond
Glasses - Ray Ban

I got this dress a few weeks ago and I really love the print and the color choices. I think grey is a nice balance for a warmer day for people who don't like to stray to far into pastel world but still want a softer look. Grey also is enhanced by black accessories, meaning you can get use out of your winter wear during the transition months! The very oversized cut of this dress was right up my alley, but it does ebb on the short side. Like - don't drop anything you'll need to pick up short side. Being my klutzy self and knowing the possibility of me eating it was high, I added lace trim bike shorts (not pictured) underneath to give myself a little safety blanket.
For the accessories, I broke out one of my favorite hats that I don't get to wear to often, my newest chunky black shoes, and some simple silver jewelry. When adding pieces like a statement shoe or hat (or both!) I like to choose a little lighter jewelry so there isn't too much going on.
I like this outfit because I think it provides a girly look with a funky edge, making it perfect for a casual friday night celebration! All that was necessary was my trusty vintage levi trucker jacket (not pictured) once the temperature decided to drop a bit! Comfy and practical with the safety of shorts, I was able to move about and still feel 100% about my outfit choice!

Thank you so much for reading! As always, seeing people look at my page brightens my day, so please keep returning. I promise I'm trying to get better! :)

Spring has sprung at store 41

So yesterday at work I got to do my favorite part of my job - dressing the mannequins! I've been doing more of this since I got promoted a few months ago and I'm hoping with lots of practice my merchandising skills will grow. This "shop" or stylized part of the women's section is meant for the spring time girly girl. Working with lots of lace, floral prints, and short hemlines always gets me going, so it was a very rewarding task on a stressful day.

Because most of our customers are college students, I wanted to style looks that would be cute and comfortable for a long school day. I tried to add a slightly different personality to each outfit by adding things like flatforms, leather, and strappy bralettes. My goal was to make each outfit unique from the others while still featuring the stores top trends and styles. I did this all very quickly but I was pretty happy with the result!

As always, big thanks for stopping by to read! May your weekend be fabulous and full of friends, I know mine will be :)

Wrong side of the tracks?

Hi friends! I feel like it's been so long since I've been able to post anything, whether it be finding the time to actually write something or just wrangling someone to take my outfit pictures (really need to get a tripod… and figure out the self timer…) Thankfully for me and for the livelihood of my blog, my good friend Des stepped in to help me get some awesome shots!

Des and I took a stroll into my backyard, which just so happens to be a train station. We walked around for a bit with Des working her magic and I think we were both pleased with the results! :)
Going for a sort of Wednesday Adams meets Lolita meets Stevie Nicks, I opted for pairing my extremely girly top with a plain silhouette on the bottom, adding edge with my accessories. To further balance out the black and bondage-esque vibes I plopped my hair up into one of my favorite styles - the milkmaid braids.

Outfit Details:
Cropped ranched top: Urban Outfitters
Schoolgirl skort: Forever 21
Necklace: Urban Outfitters
Shoes: Vagabond

My favorite part of this look is most DEFINITELY the shoes! I've been eyeing these beauties for months and they've just been sitting in my cart online. Thankfully some kind soul returned them to my store a few days before I got paid! Lucky me!
Thank you all so much for taking the time to click on my link and check out the page. You have no idea how happy it makes me to see that someone chose to take a look! I'm blushing just thinking about it. I hope you have a week just as wonderful as you are!
Xoxo Mandee
